Winslow to have MRI

If you watched the game Monday night, then you saw Paul Posluszny make a nice tackle on Kellen Winslow that drove Winslow’s shoulder into the ground.  Winslow came up wincing in pain and briefly left the field.  It looked like it hurt a bit.  I’m not sure if it was the same shoulder that bothered him all of last year or not.  We’ll know more about it once he has the MRI done and hopefully everything comes back negative.  As much crap as I give this guy, I also give him a lot of credit for playing through the pain he does.  He has talent and determination, I just wish he showed that every game.

Sidenote:  If he can’t play this weekend, don’t worry too much about it.  The team has played extremely well with Steve Heiden in place of Winslow.  The running game is better because Heiden blocks better and the passing game improves because the ball gets spread around more.

Browns @ Bills prediction

I’m going to go out on a limb and predict a Browns win tonight. I see no reason why we can’t win this game, especially with Quinn at QB. With Quinn in the game, Chud will keep the play calling conservative with mid-range throws and hopefully a brutal running game. This kind of play calling normally irritates me, but in bad weather conditions like tonight, it’s perfect. If Mel Tucker can come up with a decent defensive scheme that can keep the Bills’ running game in check, we should be good to go. Those are a couple of big question marks for the Browns, but with a lot of rest between games I think we’ll be fine.

We should see tonight what kind of a coach Crennelephant is for sure. There’s been a lot of rumbling in the locker room since the last game. Guys are complaining that some players quit at the end of the last game and didn’t give it there all. That directly reflects on the coaches and their ability to keep everything organized. If the Browns get behind in the game early, look to see if any players give up on plays, (ie: Edwards and Winslow).

My prediction is that the Browns win 17-10.

Web site begs Randy Lerner to hire Bill Cowher

Two local guys have created a web site with one goal in mind…replacing Crennelephant with Bill Cowher.  They’re trying to get 73,200 signatures on a petition to submit directly to Randy Lerner in hopes it will show how passionate and upset we are.  Yeah I said we…because I signed the petition.  I highly doubt it will do any good, but there’s always a slim chance of hope that Lerner cares about what the fans think.  I’m all for Bill Cowher coming back to Cleveland.  In case some of you didn’t know, Cowher played and coached at one point for the Browns.  So check out their web site and sign the petition if you choose.  Let’s see if we can bring in the Chin.  Here’s the link:

Indians pitcher, broadcaster Herb Score dies

By TOM WITHERS, AP Sports Writer

CLEVELAND (AP)—Herb Score, the Cleveland Indians pitcher and former broadcaster whose promise on the mound was shattered by a line drive, died Tuesday. He was 75.

Score died at his home in Rocky River, Ohio, the team said in a statement. He had been in a wheelchair since suffering a stroke in 2002, four years after he was seriously injured in a car accident.

A hard-throwing left-hander with a big fastball and big heart, Score pitched for the Indians from 1955-59. He was named the American League Rookie of the Year in 1955 after going 16-10. He went 20-9 in 1956 and was twice named to the All-Star team.

However, Score’s career took a sad and nearly tragic turn on May 7, 1957, when Gil McDougald of the New York Yankees lined a ball off Score’s right eye, breaking his nose and a number of bones in his face. As Score lay fallen on the field covered in blood, the public address announcer asked the crowd at Municipal Stadium, “If there is a doctor in the stands, will he please report to the playing field.”

Fearful of being hit again, Score changed his pitching motion, with less than favorable results. After two losing seasons in Cleveland he pitched parts of three seasons with the Chicago White Sox. He never won more than nine games after the injury and retired in 1962 with a 55-46 record and 837 strikeouts in 858-plus innings.

“Herb Score, who was signed by the same scout Cy Slapnicka as I was, would’ve been just as good if not better than Sandy Koufax if it wouldn’t have been for his injury to his eye,” Hall of Fame pitcher Bob Feller said. “And Sandy Koufax was the best pitcher I ever saw in my lifetime. He was a very dear friend of mine.”

Not long after ending his playing career, Score began a second one in baseball when he joined the Indians’ TV broadcast team in 1964. He moved to radio in 1968.

A native of Rosedale, N.Y., his deep voice and thick New York accent became a fixture for generations of Indians fans. He retired from broadcasting after the 1997 season, his 34th in the booth.

“Today is a sad day for the Cleveland Indians family and for Cleveland Indians fans everywhere,” president Paul Dolan said in a statement released by the team. “We have lost one of the greatest men in the history of our franchise. Generations of Indians fans owe their love of the Tribe to Herb Score, who was a powerful pitcher and legendary broadcaster. Our thoughts and prayers are with Nancy and the Family.”

Score was named to Cleveland’s 100th anniversary team in 2001. He was inducted into the Indians Hall of Fame in 2006.

From the outset, Score showed as much promise as the three future Hall of Famers—Bob Lemon, Early Wynn, and Feller—he joined on the Cleveland staff. In fact, the Indians reportedly refused an offer of $1 million for Score from the Red Sox early in 1957.

During his 1955 rookie year, Score recorded 245 strikeouts, a rookie record that stood until 1984 when it was broken by the New York Mets Dwight Gooden.

Score followed that up by going 20-9 with a 2.53 ERA and a league-leading 263 strikeouts in 1956.

However, the solidly built lefty had an awkward pitching motion that left him vulnerable to balls hit back through the mound.

While the Indians languished for decades during Score’s broadcasting tenure, his last game ended up being Game 7 of the 1997 World Series. As it turned out, the Indians blew a ninth-inning lead and lost it in the 11th, missing a chance to end a World Series title drought dating back to 1948.

As always, Score’s last call was simple, accurate and to the point.

“Line drive, base hit, the game is over,” Score said, summing up Edgar Renteria’s series-winning hit off Charles Nagy.

Score’s personal sendoff was brief, too.

“And so that is the season for 1997,” he said. “And there’s very little else we can say except to tell you it’s been a pleasure. I would like to thank all the fans for their kindness over the years. You’ve been very good to me. And we hope that whoever sits in this chair next, you’ll be as kind to them as you have been to me.”

Score’s subdued style was perfect for fans who couldn’t afford to take their pitiful Indians too seriously. Like the late Harry Caray, Score was especially beloved for his ability to gracefully gloss over mistakes (“Swing and a miss, it’s fouled back to the screen.”).

“Herb told the truth the way he saw it,” said former Indians manager Mike Hargrove, who once called Score “the ultimate been-there, done-that guy.”

Later in life, Score suffered additional setbacks. He was injured in a traffic accident, incurring a brain bruise and broken ribs when his car collided with a tractor-trailer.

Score is survived by his wife of more than 40 years, Nancy, and three children.

Funeral arrangements have not been finalized.

What’s wrong with the Browns Part #1

Normally at this point in the season, I hope to be talking about what’s right with the Browns.  However that’s not possible this season because hardly anything is going right.  I definitely wouldn’t have multiple parts to the discussion, and probably not even multiple sentences.  So in no particular order, I’m going to start with some of the things that are bothering me with this season.

The coaching staff:

This will not be one of those posts that completely rips on the head coach.  I believe our entire coaching staff has systematically given up on the season.  Let’s start with the offense.  Rob Chudzinski seems to start games off hot or cold.  He’s either really aggressive the first half or he plays Tressel ball.  The last few weeks he’s started off aggressive with his playcalling and it’s worked for the most part.  However it doesn’t matter how well he does in the first half because no matter what he goes ultra-conservative in the second half…playing "Not to lose".  He just can’t seem to keep things going and when the offense actually needs to march down the field to score some points because our defense blew the lead…they’re entirely out of sync with each other resulting in a 3 and out.  Chud also has a problem identifying which players give us the best chance to win.  For example, the first half of the Denver game, Jerome Harrison was a stud.  He was picking up first downs one after another no problem.  Josh Cribbs was more involved than I’ve seen in a while, being used in some nice fashion.  But where’d they go???  Cribbs was around for the second half, but there was no creativity with the playcalling to help him succeed.  Jerome Harrison was not seen, which answers my question as to why he was called "The Ghost" in college.  Why would you not keep it up with this kid?  He’s obviously a good tandem with Jamal Lewis.  My last point about Chud deals with Lewis…RUN HIM.  When we run the ball we win.  Simple.  Run Lewis, and run Harrison.  Try running it once on critical, end of the game 2nd and 1’s, 3rd and 1’s, and 4th and 1’s.

Mel Tucker:

Are you kidding me?  You’re supposed to be a defensive backs coach Mel!  What is your problem?  Shouldn’t you be able to devise a defensive scheme so that McDonald and Wright don’t get burned multiple times a game?  Last game I was ready to blame everything on McDonald until I realized he had absolutely no help from his safeties.  Maybe you should look into that Mel.  Eric Wright may be ok all by himself, but it looks like McDonald needs help from time to time.  That could be a problem with Sean Jones not doing his job.  If I am able to question that, you should too.  I’ve heard that Jones isn’t really healthy yet, and if that’s true then put Mike Adams back in there.  He does a decent job and he’s a better tackler at the moment than Jones.  I’m not ripping Jones because I really like the kid, he’s just playing hurt.  WHERE’s the pass rush?  Why is it that every other team can blitz and have a guy get to the QB, but our blitzers are picked up every time.  The only way we get a sack is if you call a corner or safety blitz….or Shaun Rogers powers his way through the o-line.  I can’t complain at all about Rogers.  He’s exceeded any expectation I had pre-season.

Crennelephant:

Everyone knows how I feel about Romeo.  He needs to go after this season.  Everyone says that it will suck because of the rebuilding process, but I don’t think it’ll be that bad.  When Romeo and Savage took over from the Botch Davis years, there was a lot of cleaning up needed.  We had hardly any talent on the team then and it was far different from now.  I believe that if we hire a new head coach that has some fire, he has a chance to be successful within his first year and definitely the second year.  Romeo has no fire in him and doesn’t look like he cares half the time.  He has a losing mentality and it’s inexcusable.

I just want a team and coach that actually cares about the Pittsburgh rivalry.  It’s more than just a game.

Romeo Must Die

No, I’m not talking about the awfully bad Jet Li movie of the same title.  But seriously that movie is bad, like Police Academy 4 bad.  I’m talking about Romeo getting the axe, getting fired, or thrown out on his butt.  How long does everyone think it’ll take?  I was talking with a friend about this and we thought it may come even before our next game.  After further thought, I don’t think that’ll happen.  What’s the point?  We fire Romeo and Chud steps into his place as interim head coach.  He’ll still be calling the plays and our defense will still be horrible.  If anyone’s got any ideas why Romeo needs to be fired right this second, let me know.  I’m all for kicking him to the curb at the end of the season, but I just don’t see the need now.

Oh, and when he goes…he can take all his assistant coaches with him.

Excitement takes place of anger

Wow did I fly off the handle on Sunday.  I’ll be the first one to admit it.  I’m still a little ticked off, but the excitement of tonight’s game is quickly replacing that anger.  It’s like I live week to week with the Browns and each game offers hope of turning the season around.  It wouldn’t matter if we were 0-8 right now, I’d still look forward to each game the same.

I don’t care if you like Quinn or not, because the excitement surrounding this game is undeniable.  Those of us who are rooting for Quinn are excited to see him finally play and find out what he can do.  Those of you who hate him are probably still wondering…What IF?  To me, it’s like watching Ohio State this year.  I know we’re not going to be the greatest team in the NCAA, but it’s still fun to watch Pryor and get a feel for what kind of QB he’ll be down the road.

Will we win out the rest of the season?  No, I highly doubt it.  I’m not even thinking it because it’s that improbable.  Ideally I’d like to win another six games, but I certainly don’t want to do any worse than 8-8.  However, I won’t be surprised if we end up 6-10.  That’s just my two cents and we’ll see how it all plays out.  There’s a lot of people around me who think if this season keeps up the way it is and we go 6-10, that Crennelephant will be fired and replaced by Bill Cowher.  I think I’m ok with that right now.

Injury Update

Eric Steinbach and Lawrence Vickers are both doubtful for Tonight’s game against Denver.  Shaun Rogers is listed as Questionable.

Steinbach is listed as having a pulled muscle in his rib area so hopefully that will only keep him out a week, but who knows.  Seth McKinney will step in for him as he did during the Ravens game and I think he’ll do just fine.

Vickers is rehabbing an ankle injury, but I also have confidence that Charles Ali will do well.  I like him as a receiving threat out of the backfield better than Vickers, and there’s only a little drop off in blocking.

Shaun Rogers is apparently having problems with his ribs, but I don’t know much more than that.  Hopefully he can play tonight because this dude’s a beast.  Our defense honestly sucks without him.

Corey Williams is also listed as questionable with a shoulder problem.  Hopefully he can play, but I haven’t seen a whole lot that impresses me by him this season.  I’m giving him time though.

Donte "Porcelain" Stallworth is listed as probable, but he probably hurt himself getting out of bed this morning.  I’ll believe he’s going to play when I see him on the field.

Bra-dy! Bra-dy!

Well it looks like a lot of us will get our wish this upcoming Thursday night. It seems the Browns will start Brady Quinn at QB in place of Derek Anderson. For those of you that haven’t noticed or have been living on a different continent, Derek Anderson has sucked this year.

In all fairness, I don’t believe that starting Quinn on Thursday will bring an end to all our problems, but it could eliminate one of those problems… It could also help out Edwards and see if he catches the ball better. Who knows.

What a JOKE!

How terrible are the Cleveland Browns? Pretty stinkin’ bad!

It goes against my better judgment to write this post so quickly after a loss, but if I don’t write something I’m going to break something…so I figure this is the better anger outlet.

That gurgling sound you can hear all throughout Cleveland is the sound of the Browns choking. Anderson choked, Edwards choked, the o-line choked, Chudzinski choked, Crennel choked, and the Browns suck. How do you give up a two touchdown lead so easily? Well that’s easy, it happens from playing pathetic defense, missed tackles, and offensive playcalling that sucks. Good job Chud, let’s keep running the ball on first and second downs. 3rd and 8 sounds like fun doesn’t it? Anderson doesn’t deserve his job anymore. I don’t care about the touchdowns he threw, I care about the lame passing he did when the game was resting square in his hands. He blew it. Of course, he had help though.

Oh, and how about throwing the ball a little when Heiden is in the game Chud? Everyone including my mother knows we’re going to run the ball when Heiden’s in there because Winslow can’t block worth anything.

It’s time to bench Anderson and bring in Quinn! What’s the point of letting Anderson keep playing? He’s proven he can’t get it done. Why waste our time continuing to prove that he can only play good 1 of 3 games. Pull the trigger.

The only reason we were in this game was because of Cribbs anyway.
